Easy Nutella Puff Pastry Ring

Whenever I want an easy sweet treat that looks a little special, this Nutella puff pastry ring is one of my go-to recipes—it’s flaky, chocolatey, full of crunchy walnuts, and ready in about 30 minutes.

It is simple enough for a last-minute dessert but also looks lovely served for breakfast, brunch, or alongside a cup of coffee.

It is delicious at any time of the year, but it feels especially cozy during fall. It also makes a beautiful addition to the Christmas table, and t’s hard to resist pulling off a warm, chocolatey piece.

Yield: 6 to 8 servings
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 to 25 minutes
Total Time: About 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 rectangular sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed according to the package directions, about 9 ounces
  • ⅓ cup Nutella
  • ⅓ cup finely chopped walnuts
  • 1 large egg mixed with 1 teaspoon water, for brushing, optional
  • Powdered sugar, for serving, optional

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. If your puff pastry already comes on parchment paper, you can use that paper to help shape and transfer the pastry.

2. Unfold the thawed puff pastry onto a clean, flat surface. If necessary, gently roll it into an even rectangle, being careful not to make the pastry too thin.

3. Spread the Nutella evenly over the puff pastry using a spatula or the back of a spoon. Leave a border of about ½ inch around the edges so the filling does not spill out while you roll the pastry.

4. Sprinkle the chopped walnuts evenly over the Nutella. Press them down very gently so they stay in place.

5. Starting from one of the longer sides, roll the puff pastry tightly into a long log. Use the parchment paper to help guide the pastry as you roll. Finish with the seam facing down.

6. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the roll lengthwise into two long strips. Turn both strips so the cut sides face upward, exposing the layers of Nutella and walnuts.

7. Place one strip over the other and twist them together, keeping the cut sides facing upward as much as possible. Do not twist too tightly, as the puff pastry needs space to expand in the oven.

8. Carefully shape the twisted pastry into a circle. Bring the two ends together and pinch them firmly to seal the ring. If they do not stick, lightly moisten the ends with a little water before pressing them together.

9. Transfer the ring to the prepared baking sheet. Adjust the shape with your hands so the circle is even and the center remains open.

10. Brush the top and sides lightly with the egg wash, if using. This will help the puff pastry develop a glossy, golden finish.

11. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, crisp, and deeply golden. Start checking it around the 20-minute mark, as baking times may vary depending on your oven and the brand of puff pastry.

12. Remove the ring from the oven and allow it to cool on the baking sheet for 5 to 10 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, and serve slightly warm or at room temperature.

The result is flaky and crisp on the outside, with warm Nutella and crunchy walnuts in every bite.

Tips for the Best Nutella Puff Pastry Ring

Make sure the puff pastry is thawed but still cold when you work with it. Pastry that becomes too warm may feel sticky and will not puff as well in the oven.

Do not spread the Nutella all the way to the edges. Leaving a small border makes the pastry easier to roll and helps prevent the filling from leaking.

If the Nutella is too firm to spread, microwave it for 5 to 10 seconds. It should be soft and spreadable but not hot or runny.

Use a sharp knife to cut the pastry roll lengthwise. This helps create clean layers that will look beautiful once the pastry is twisted and baked.

Make It Your Own

I love the combination of Nutella and walnuts, but this recipe is very easy to personalize with ingredients you already have at home. You can replace the walnuts with chopped hazelnuts, almonds, pecans, or pistachios.

If you prefer to skip the chopped nuts, simply leave out the walnuts and add a few chocolate chips instead. You can also sprinkle a little cinnamon over the Nutella for a warmer fall flavor or add finely grated orange zest when serving it during the holidays.

For an extra-special finish, drizzle the cooled ring with melted chocolate or dust it generously with powdered sugar before placing it on the Christmas table.

How to Store

This Nutella puff pastry ring is best enjoyed on the day it is baked, while the pastry is still crisp and flaky.

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat individual pieces in a 300°F oven or air fryer for a few minutes to help restore the crisp texture. Be careful not to overheat them, as the Nutella can become very hot.
